Training
This page details the in-person, online, and video training that is available through Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS). The training is offered to meet numerous regulations and/or as a resource to encourage health and safety for all University community members.

Biological Materials
This training is required for anyone doing work with human blood, human cells (including cell lines), unfixed human tissue, human body fluids, infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi, rickettsia, prions), and/or recombinant DNA materials.
Online
University staff, faculty and students may use the following online training, pertaining to biological materials:
- NEW: Bloodborne Pathogen Training Program
Required if work involves human blood, human body fluids, human cells (including cell lines), unfixed human tissue, and/or infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi, rickettsia, prions). - NIH Required IBC Training Presentations
Required if work involves recombinant DNA or artificial gene transfer. - 24 minute video: Workplace Precautions Against Bloodborne Pathogens
- Lab Safety Video Annotation Exercise: How Many Mistakes Can You Find?
LabWars is a new, interactive training exercise that uses video annotation software. It may be used to enhance lab specific safety training, but it is not a substitute. - Other available training:

Radioactive Materials
In-Person
The Radiation Protection Division (RPD) of DEHS offers annual in-person training as a part of its audit processes.
However, RPD staff members also offer customized training sessions for individual departments, facilities and/or divisions that need training in a specific area. For more information contact DEHS at (612) 626-6002 or dehs@umn.edu.
Online
University staff, faculty and students may use the following online training materials, pertaining to radioactive materials:
Radiation Safety Orientation (enrollment key = RADSAFETY) Required for all those requiring access to areas where radioactive materials are used or stored. This module serves as a prerequisite to the training listed below.
Radiation Safety for Radioactive Material Users (enrollment key = RADMATERIAL) For individuals required to handle radioactive materials. Also, all medical, dental, veterinary and research x-ray operators must complete this module for part of their radiation safety training.
