Radioactive Waste Manual

Regulatory Requirements

All persons using radioactive materials must comply with Title 10, Part 20 of the Code of Federal Regulations and with other applicable federal, state and University regulations for the disposal of all radioactive wastes. The University Radiation Protection Division (RPD) establishes and ensures compliance with the required procedures for collection, packaging, labeling, transport and disposal of radioactive waste generated within the University of Minnesota.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires that all licensees maintain written records regarding the receipt, storage and disposal of radioactive material. This information must be recorded by Permit Holders and their staff and supplied to RPD on a routine basis for documentation. The RPD maintains these required records for review by the NRC as part of their annual inspection of the University NRC license.

As an investigator generating radioactive waste, your assistance and cooperation with all waste handling procedures, and compliance with NRC license requirements is essential to assure the safe handling of radioactive waste.
