Campus Health and Safety Policy

Purpose

Classify facilities by the type of chemicals in use and storage in order to determine applicable building code and safety standards.

Impact on Campus Community

All new and rennovated facilities must be classified according to their use and storage of hazrdous chemicals.

• Use the UMN Hazardous Chemical Waste Management Guidebook to help classify chemicals and highlight special characteristics. If you do not have one , it can be obtained by calling the Chemical Waste Program (6-1604).

    • Table 5-5: Water Reactive Chemicals

• Chemicals in the same hazard class may be aggregated whenever feasible.
• Highlight chemicals in your inventory with the following characteristics:
  • Shock sensitivity
  • Pyrophoric
  • Poison A
  • Water sensitive
  • Irritant
  • Carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, or cancer suspect agent
• Highlight chemicals known to be allergic sensitizers (this characteristic is not noted in the guidebook)
• Note the quantity of flammable or oxidizing compressed gases
• Describe any process which generates combustible dust.
• "Use/open Amount" refers to the amount of open use of chemical in the laboratory, ie. the chemical is in a system where it evaporates into the laboratory space and the system is not located within a fume hood or other local ventilation device.
