Biological Material Inventory
Current federal regulations, along with public concern over security of biohazardous materials, make it necessary for the University to maintain an up-to-date inventory of infectious biological agents and biological toxins. This inventory is different from the information submitted to the IBC in that it is more comprehensive and includes stored material as well as material being used.
Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) conducts an annual inventory update for all Risk Group 2 organisms and Select Agent Toxins. The inventory records materials used/stored, the Biosafety level they are to be used at, quantities and forms of toxins, and where the material is stored. The inventory is housed on a secure database with information released only as authorized by the Biological Safety Officer.
Please call DEHS (626-6002) and ask to speak to someone in the Biosafety Unit if:
- You have a new research lab or there is a new lab in your department, regardless of the Biosafety Level being used.
- You wish to change from BL1 to BL2 status.
- Biological materials are no longer needed and you wish to destroy or transfer them. See Disposal section.
- Lab is closing (see the university's "Lab Closeout with Hazardous Materials Policy" for procedures and a closeout checklist.)
